Total costs for an expensive model patient with three transplants include:
1st islet transplant surgery
2nd islet transplant surgery
3rd islet transplant surgery
In-patient medication costs
Outpatient medication costs
The University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine will cover the actual cost of the surgery, medications for one year and ongoing care for eight months. Since this procedure is not covered by insurance, patients must support their ongoing care and medications through their own resources. With the announcement of the Chicago Islet Consortium, we hope to build a fund that will not only support the immediate islet transplant surgery, but also the ongoing and expensive costs to the patients. When the full Chicago Islet Consortium has met their goal of completing 50 transplants and receives full FDA approval, we expect insurance coverage for all or part of the cost of this procedure.
